What is Meth?
Methamphetamine is a highly dangerous and addictive drug. 98% of those who try meth “just once” become addicts.
Meth can be smoked, snorted, injected or taken orally. Its appearance varies depending on how it is used. Typically it is a white, bitter tasting powder that dissolves easily in beverages. It can also appear in the form of crystal meth or “ice” resembling clear, large chunk crystal that looks similar to rock candy. Candy-flavored meth targets younger people. Sometimes called strawberry quik it is a bright color in a foil or colored foil package. It comes in candy colors (pink, green, etc…). It still KILLS.
Meth use dilates the pupils and produces temporary hyperactivity, euphoria, a sense of increased energy and tremors. Meth affects the brain’s system that controls the body’s reproductive and nutrition functions. It can cause convulsions, stroke, brain hemorrhage, permanent brain damage, heart attack and sudden death. It can also cause fatal kidney and lung disorders, liver damage, chronic depression, paranoia and mental disorders.
Unlike heroin, cocaine, or ecstasy meth is produced in the United States. Meth is the number one drug problem for small towns and cities like Northwest Arkansas. 12-14 year olds that live in smaller towns and cities are 104% more likely to use meth than those who live in larger cities.
Meth is a threat in our area and small towns across America because it is cheap and easy to make. Over the counter drugs that can be bought at local stores are mixed with other common ingredients to make meth. The labs used to make the drugs can be set up on tables, kitchens, countertops or garages. Although the larger labs create most of the meth, these smaller labs have increased the production at an alarming rate.
To report a suspected meth lab please contact your local police department.
